A14 Histon - Impingham, Cambridgeshire - Design & Planting Scheme

As one of the preferred contractors for Carillion WSP Kettering, Salcey was asked to assist following an embankment failure along the A14 carriageway near Histon, Cambridgeshire, resulting in structural problems to the road and a hazard to the public.

After the embankment was re-engineered, Salcey project managed a design and planting scheme to reinstate the landscape. Our specialist Consultant Mike Rangeley oversaw the project designing the area according to specification and needs.

At the same time, privately owned land alongside a lake which also bounds with the nearby Cambridgeshire guided Busway, was under the radar of Cambridgeshire County Council who were looking to ecologically enhance the area in mitigation. It was considered the site had merit of special interest and conservation value as a wetland site. The nature of the flora and fauna in this area meant that designing a soft landscape and ecological mitigation scheme required specialist knowledge to ensure that the scrub planting was indigenous to the area and that the soil conditions were suitable for the germination of the proposed wild flower sowing.

Initially the embankment and Guided Busway schemes were operating in isolation. However, the intense engineering operation to reinstate the embankment failure conflicted with the ecological mitigation scheme and so the two schemes were amalgamated and Salcey were instructed to design the planting scheme and carry out the soft landscaping and planting for both areas. We were required to produce CAD drawings and worked according to Cambridgeshire County Councils specification as well as drawing on our wealth of ecological and vegetation knowledge.

Offering specialist services such as consultancy, planting and ecology, and having dedicated staff who are highly skilled and experienced in these areas, meant that Salcey were able to deliver comprehensive and effective solutions for both projects, reducing costs, improving operational efficiencies and protecting the environment.
